India-NZ tie: Seven punters arrested

MOHALI:The police have arrested seven punters from Mohali while accepting bets during the ODI match between India and New Zealand at the PCA Stadium here yesterday.

The police have arrested seven punters from Mohali while accepting bets during the ODI match between India and New Zealand at the PCA Stadium here yesterday.

Among the accused are Deepak from Delhi, Afzal from Maharashtra, Sunil from Gujarat, Rakesh Verma from Mumbai (West) and Gobind Sardana and Mukesh Kumar from Hisar. The police recovered 15 cellphones from their possession.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed to having accepted bets from their regular clients by using code words. The punters used to get Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 per match from bookies.

According to the police, they got a tip-off about the presence of the bookies in the town. After registering a case against the punters, the police produced them before a local court. The court remanded them in two-day police custody.
