Chandigarh, May 24
An undertrial, Sandeep Kumar, alias Sunny, who had fled from the District Courts Complex on October 6 last year and later forcibly took away a car near the Kalibari temple light point in Sector 31 on October 12 before being finally re-arrested by the Chandigarh Police in November, today tried to commit suicide by cutting his veins with a shaving blade at the Burail jail.
This is the second such incident this year in which a jail inmate has tried to commit suicide.
Sources said the inmate tried to slit the veins of both his wrists with a blade in the barracks. The jail staff rushed him to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16. He was later discharged after treatment.
The police said the inmate had an altercation with a few inmates after which he attempted suicide. “It may have been part of a plan to escape from police custody after getting admitted to the hospital,” said a police official.
Sunny, a notorious criminal, has several cases registered against him in Chandigarh and Punjab. He had fled from the court complex on October 6. Six days later, he forcibly took away an Indica car from a Mohali resident near the Kalibari temple light point in Sector 31.
Sunny had also threatened the then SHO of the Sector 19 police station after the area police arrested three girls, including his sister, for creating a ruckus in a drunken state at the Sector 18/19 light point on October 24.
The inmate was finally re-arrested by a team of the crime branch on November 6 from Dhanas while he, along with his accomplice, had come to collect money from a local resident.
The sources said Sunny was known for his violent nature among the jail inmates.
