A 45-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Sector 22 this afternoon. The victim, who owned a jewellery shop in Sector 23, has left a three-page suicide note.

The victim, Amit Kumar, alias Goldy, was reportedly depressed for the past few months due to loss of business. He was under a huge debt. The victim is survived by his wife, Rachna, and two children — a five-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter.

Sources said the victim came home today at around 1 pm and asked for food. The victim then went upstairs to freshen up. However, he did not return. The victim’s son and mother were in the house while his wife had gone out for her job, which she had recently joined. His daughter had gone to school while his father had gone to a temple in Sector 29.

After coming back from school, the victim’s daughter found him hanging.

The police were informed about the incident and the victim was rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, where doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the hospital for a postmortem.

The sources said the deceased owned a jewellery shop at the Sector 23 market, which he had to sell since he was under a huge debt.

Following the loss in business, his wife had also joined a job in a private firm in the city a couple of months ago.

The deceased had taken a loan from a bank and was unable to pay back its instalments due to which he was also attending a hearing in the court.

Police officials said the suicide note was being verified. “We don’t suspect any foul play in the case,” said a police official.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated in the case.

Important documents kept in car

Sources said in the suicide day, the victim had mentioned that all important documents which his family would require in the future had been kept in the car.

Past incident

This is the second incident in which a city-based jeweller has died in less than a week. On May 19, the body of a missing jeweller, a resident of Sector 28, was recovered from a canal near Patiala.
