Kharar, November 6

The Municipal Council (MC), Kharar, today decided to impose a complete ban on the usage, sale and storage of all types of polythene bags within the municipal limits with effect from November 15. The violators would be fined.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting, chaired by MC president Anju Chander, here. Most of the members were present but MLA Kanwar Sandhu was conspicuous by his absence.

Members of the House had a heated debate over the issue as most of them were of the view that polybags were the reason behind the garbage mess as these led to the blockage of sewage lines in many places. After the discussion, a resolution was adopted unanimously to ban polythene bags. All the shopkeepers have been asked to dispose of their stock by November 15 as the MC will take appropriate action against the errants after that.

Meanwhile, various resolutions to make Kharar open defecation-free city were passed. Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, construction of public toilets were approved in several places. A resolution was passed to declare toilets at petrol pumps, banks, railway stations, hospitals, restaurants and health centres as public toilets. Eight community toilets across the town will be constructed. Also a three-member committee, comprising Kamal Kishore, Pargat Singh and Kuldeep Singh, was formed to identify a suitable place for constructing a gaushala (cowshed).

While talking to mediapersons, MC president Anju Chander said unauthorised colonies mushrooming within the municipal limits should be banned and no building plans should be passed in these colonies. She said that she had taken up the matter with the authorities concerned.
