Kharar, March 7

The Kharar Municipal Council (MC) has turned down the demand of the Department of Soil and Water Conservation to deposit Rs 2.84 crore for treating sewage so that it could be utilised for irrigation purposes.

The MC, at a meeting chaired by president Anju Chander, resolved that the civic body could not

afford to pay the amount in view of its poor fiscal health. The Municipal Council urged the state government to bear the expenditure.

The resolution was adopted after the issue was discussed in detail at the meeting. It was stated at the meeting that the sewage treated at the local treatment plant was supplied to Bajheri, Sotal, Grangan, Shergarh and Anandpur villages for irrigation purposes.

Raising a issue of a defunct tubewell, councillor Rajinder Singh Namardar said it was installed at a stadium in his ward but was not working for the past three years.

Rajinder Singh Namardar said the requisite Rs 15 lakh was paid by the Municipal Council to the Water Supply and Sewerage Board in 2016 but they did not repair the tubewell. He threatened to stage a dharna if the repair work was not started within 15 days.

Councillor Pargat Singh demanded that tubewells for providing drinking water  be installed in Jandpur and Haralpur villages.
