After a father of two was crushed by an HRTC bus while he was getting down from it, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) awarded his family Rs 21 lakh. Arvind Kumar Sharma was getting down in Zirakpur in October last year when the bus drove off and Sharma was crushed under its wheels.

As per the complaint, on October 23, 2017, when the bus reached on the bus stop of Zirakpur, near Singhpura turn, the driver of the bus stopped his bus. While passengers were getting down from the front door of the bus, the driver of the bus moved his bus all of a sudden, without caring for the passengers who were still in the process of getting down and without waiting for the whistle of the conductor.

As a result, Sharma fell on the road and was dragged by the bus. His body was struck by the rear tyre of the aforesaid bus. Sharma was taken to a hospital but died during treatment. A case was registered against the driver, Jagdev, alias Jagdeb Singh.

The driver and HRTC in their reply said the bus was stopped by a policeman but Sharma jumped before it was stopped. The deceased was working as a quality in-charge in a Sonepat-based company and was said to be earning Rs 12,000 per month.

The tribunal decided it to be Rs 9,000 per month as there was no documentary evidence of the salary. The tribunal awarded Rs 21.11 lakh as relief to the family.
