Former Union Minister Manish Tewari’s mother Prof Amrit Tewari was cremated today.

A sea of humanity descended at the cremation ground of Sector 25 to pay their last respects.

Prof Amrit Tewari (80) died on Saturday night. She is survived by her son and daughter.

A number of legal luminaries and doctors were present at the cremation ground where Manish Tewari lit the pyre.

His cousin Justice Ajay Tewari of the Punjab and Haryana High Court was also present.

Punjab Assembly speaker Rana KP Singh, former MLA Jagmohan Singh Kang, former MPs Pawan Kumar Bansal and Satya Pal Jain, Chandigarh Mayor Devesh Moudgil, Panjab University (PU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover, Registrar PU Col GS Chadha (retd), Haryana IAS officer Ashok Khemka, DGP Punjab Suresh Arora, Advocate General Atul Nanda, journalist Pankaj Pachauri and Haryana Congress politician Vijay Bansal had come to pay their respects.

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Director Prof Jagat Ram, PGIMER Deputy Director Amitabh Awasthi were present. Local politicians from Ludhiana had also come.

Prof Tewari was born on September 5, 1938. She was conferred Padma Shri in 1992 and received BC Roy Award in 1993.

Her husband Dr VN Tewari was assassinated in 1984.

She had been Emeritus Professor, PGIMER, and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Emeritus Medical Scientist also. She was Dean, PGIMER, from March 1997 to September 1998, after which she retired. She remained the head of the Oral Health Sciences Centre, PGIMER, from February 1972 to September 1998. She had also been Sub Dean from June 1994 to March, 1997.
