Chandigarh, December 16

Day after The Tribune highlighted the plight of residents in the absence of bus queue shelters in the city, an advocate, Pankaj Chandgothia, has  served a legal notice on the  Chandigarh Administration.

The legal notice, served today under Section 80 of the Code of Civil Procedure, calls upon the authorities to   get the designated bus shelters erected within a period of 60 days from today. In the event of failure to do so, he will file a civil suit against the authorities concerned in the court of competent jurisdiction for appropriate relief.

He said the suit would be filed under Section 91 of the CPC relating to public nuisance. Chandgothia mentioned the plight  of commuters highlighted in the news  report of The Tribune.

The notice mentions that the delay in construction of new bus queue shelters is forcing commuters to endure vagaries of weather. They have to stand under the open sky braving chilly winds during winter and rain.

The administration dismantled more than 300 bus queue shelters made of stainless steel in November last year. Since then, the departments of transport, engineering and architecture have failed to come up with a common design of new bus queue shelters.

Chandgothia said inaction and delay on the part of the authorities are resulting in avoidable hardship to the common man. Such delay and neglect are not expected from the functionaries of a welfare state. Therefore, the notice calls upon the authorities  to do the needful and get the designated bus shelters erected within a period of 60 days from today.
