A team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) paid a visit to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, today for the final inspection to confirm additional 50 medical seats, sanctioned in 2012.

As per the protocol, if the MCI allows any institute to increase its seats, for the first five years, inspections are carried out annually to check whether the college is updating its infrastructure and human resources.

According to the Director-Principal, Dr AK Janmeja, the students, who took admission in 2012, would be appearing for the final exams this year. “The team had visited to oversee the arrangements,” said Dr Janmeja.

The increase in the number of seats by the MCI in 2012-13 had hit many road blocks. First, the MCI increased seats from 50 to 100 only for one year. The next year, the MCI revoked the decision, stating that the college had many deficiencies.

The MCI decision had then sparked protests and finally the authorities succumbed to pressure and gave a nod to continue filling 100 medical seats.
