Chandigarh, June 19

Established in 1968, the MCM DAV College for Women stands tall in the field of higher education. The inception of the institution was dedicated to the exemplary contribution by Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan, the former Chief Justice of India. Subsequently, the college (MCM) was named after the great visionary and educationist.

The college today boasts of a legacy which spans across 50 glorious years of its foundation. President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, himself graced the precincts of the college to celebrate the golden jubilee of the college.

Through these five decades, the MCM has persevered through every obstacle and challenge to become a brand in itself. At present, the college is progressing at a fast pace. Ushering into new heights, the MCM is embracing latest innovations with open arms. What makes the MCM an education maestro is its optimistic approach that strikes a fine balance between education for life and education for living.

As an institution, the MCM has come a long way — starting from the rented rooms of DAV School, Sector 15, Chandigarh, to owning state-of-the-art infrastructure in the region. Owing to the excellent infrastructure and futuristic vision of Principal Nisha Bhargava, the college has been awarded Grade A by the NAAC. The Star Status accorded by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, to the college has also brought to it a grant of Rs 80 lakh.

Academics are the core focus at the MCM as every year, students from the college bag top positions in the Panjab University examinations. To ensure the holistic development of students, training in skill enhancement and soft skills is provided on the campus. Besides, coaching for the civil services exams is also given to students in the college.

While academics are the core focus, sports are forte of the institute. The MCM has grabbed the Panjab University Women’s Efficiency Shield 38 times in 50 years of its existance. Students of the MCM have bagged top prizes at various national and international sports competitions. It is the only college to promote the rock climbing adventure, which attracts students from other colleges also.

The MCM students have also established their repute in Punjab University zonal youth and heritage festivals. The college organises hawan at the beginning of every academic session.

Keeping the present-day challenges in view, the MCM has set up vermicompost units to convert kitchen and garden waste into organic manure, artificial forest with plants of medicinal properties, biogas plant to utilise the waste as bio-fuel. Rallies and environment awareness drives are also launched across the city throughout the year.

The college hostel

MCM Hostel, which is one of the most sought after across the region for its amenities and secure atmosphere, is a home away from home for students. It houses approximately 997 students, who are provided with numerous facilities.
