Chandigarh, January 23

A fire incident broke out again at girls’ Hostel No.3 again on Tuesday.

Sita, a PhD student of Botany, who is staying in Room No. 51, lit up a lamp for prayers in the morning. “She accidentally threw the burning matchstick on the ground. A wallpaper there caught the fire. She didn’t notice the fire and went downstairs for 10 minutes,” said Assistant Professor Ravneet Kaur, warden of girls’ Hostel No. 3.

“When she came back, a part of her mattress and bag got burnt while the wall got blackened. She informed the hostel authorities. The fire was doused off,” said the warden

“The hostel staff extinguished the fire. Though fire tender was called but the fire was doused by that time. It was a minor fire,” said Dean Students Welfare Prof Emanual Nahar.

“We have got her room whitewashed. She came back soon so damage was little. She is staying in that room only,” said the warden.

She added, “We need to train the students to be careful with lamps and incensed sticks.”

The hostel had witnessed a fire incident on January 13 too when Room No. 34, also located on second floor, got gutted. Books, clothes, a laptop, phone, Kindle, iron and tea kettle of the two hostellers had got burnt. The certificates of a student had also got damaged.

Along with Room No.34, the fire had also affected nearby rooms, including Room No’s 35, 36, 37 and 38.
