Three unidentified bike-borne assailants shot dead a 35-year-old mobile shop owner in a busy market in Baltana here today.

The owner of Jain Mobile Centre at Baltana, Ajay Jain, was on his way back home to Modern Enclave in Zirakpur after closing the shop when he was shot dead, police sources said. The incident occurred around 9.50 pm. One of the three assailants, who was wearing a helmet, fired two shots in the victim's head from close range. The assailants escaped from the spot after firing several rounds.

Ajay was rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The police said they received information about the incident around 11 pm. “We are recording the statements of eyewitnesses. The assailants were aware of the timings of the victim and the crime was performed with planning,” said a police official.

The police said old enmity was believed to be the reason behind the shooting. The police said they were examining the CCTV footage.
