MOHALI: In the double murder case of senior journalist KJ Singh and his 92-year-old mother, the Mohali police are all set to present challan against the accused, Gaurav Kumar, in a local court soon.

In the double murder case of senior journalist KJ Singh and his 92-year-old mother, the Mohali police are all set to present challan against the accused, Gaurav Kumar, in a local court soon.

The police are going to list 18-20 prosecution witnesses, including two of the relatives of the victims, in the case. “The required verification in this regard has been done. Of the total witnesses, statements of three of them have been recorded before the magistrate,” said sources.

The other witnesses include two constables, who arrested the accused, the shopkeeper to whom Gaurav had sold KJ’s LCD, the maker of fake number plates, which were affixed on KJ Singh’s car, and some officials of KJ’s car dealer, mobile service provider, mobile phone shopkeeper, etc..

The police are waiting for the forensic report of the knife used in the crime. “The knife has blood stains, which we require to match with the victim’s (KJ) blood. The knife was recovered from Gaurav,” said the sources.

Mohali Superintendent of Police Harbir Singh Atwal confirmed that almost all formalities had been completed in this regard. “The challan would be presented in the court within a week,” said Atwal.

Atwal claimed that the police had all sufficient proofs, evidences and the recovered belongings of the victims, which were adequate to convict Gaurav in the case.

“We will request to run the trial in a fast-track court,” said SP Harbir Singh Atwal.

The police have arrested Gaurav for murdering KJ Singh and his mother Gurcharan Kaur at their residences at Phase 3B2 here. The police had claimed that Gaurav had committed the crime to take revenge of his insult at KJ Singh’s hands during a tiff just a few hours before the crime.
