Mohali, May 26

Taking the first step towards exploiting renewable energy, the Mohali Municipal Corporation is all set to harness solar power and become the first government solar building in the district.

A 70 kW solar panel is being installed on the roof of MC Bhawan in Sector 68. It will start generating solar power within 15 days.

Giving details, Mohali MC Commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta said 90 per cent work on the project had been completed. “We will start generating solar power within 15 days,” said Gupta.

The environment-friendly project, costing Rs 54.25 lakh, will also help the MC in saving several lakhs of rupees, being spent on electricity bills every year.

According to Gupta, the one-month electricity bill of the building in summer is nearly Rs 2 lakh and in winter it is around Rs 1 lakh.

“With a five-day week schedule, we are hopeful of saving solar energy, which will go to the PSPCL grid and help us save more bucks,” said the officer.

The panel is being installed by Sukam Power Systems Limited. The tender in this regard was floated in July last year. The company is also responsible for the maintenance of the project for 10 years.

After the MC building, the authorities have decided to install three more solar panels on the roofs of Gopal Gaushala and the fire brigade office, both located in the Industrial Area, and the library in Phase X.
