Mohali, October 20

After pumping six bullets into his wife Kulwant Kaur, 60-year-old Nirankar Singh had immediately realised his action. Before lying down on the road after committing the crime, Nirankar Singh, the owner of Sarao Hotel at Phase X, made a call to the Mohali PCR and informed the receiver about the incident.

“He posed himself as a passerby and insisted that the police should come to the spot quickly. He wanted the police to reach fast and save his wife by taking her to hospital,” said the police.

During his interrogation, Nirankar Singh stated that he saw his wife breathing after he had fired at her.

Nirankar had murdered his wife in the Indigo car of his hotel’s general manager at around 9.30 am on October 18 when the couple was on their way to the PGI, Chandigarh. A case of murder was registered against him at the Phase XI police station.

Inspector Amarpreet Singh, SHO, Phase XI police station, said the accused was apparently regretting his action. Revealing the details of the incident to the police, the hotelier said his wife had started taunting him in the car and he asked her to keep quiet as he was not feeling well. As she did not listen to him, he shot her dead, he added.

“The accused was being constantly pressured by his wife and his in-laws to shift to England after disposing of all his property here,” said Inspector Amarpreet Singh.

The accused, who had earlier shifted to England after his marriage, was reluctant to go there due to the hardships he had faced abroad earlier. “This was the bone of contention between the couple, who had also filed a case of separation,” said the cop.  Meanwhile, the accused, who was remanded for one-day police custody, has been sent to judicial custody.
