Nearly 150 families of Nagla village falling under the jurisdiction of the Zirakpur Municipal Council have been facing a tough time for the past eight days due to a shortage of potable water.

The reason behind the shortage is said to be a snag developed by the motor of the tubewell from which the village gets water. It has not been repaired for the past one week.

To meet their need for water, residents of Nagla village have now switch to water tankers and are forced to purchase water for Rs 350 per tanker.

Some residents are forced to fetch water from nearby houses that has submersibles. Submersible water is also not safe for drinking, poses a threat of epidemic. The water provided through the tankers is also not enough for each household.

The residents said despite repeated complaints, MC officials did not take any step to redress their issue.

On Thursday, a delegation of villagers met MC officials and urged them to make arrangements to run the tubewell.

The officials concerned are hopeful of early restoration of the drinking water supply to the village.

Besides, unscheduled power cuts and low voltage have added to their woes.

“Except drinking water, we do not expect anything from the MC. We are suffering everyday as we have to fetch water from hand pumps and other sources,” said Sucha Singh, a resident.

“We are purchasing water for domestic purposes, but for potable water, area residents are at the mercy of submersibles or hand pumps. The water crisis has added our woes,” rued Mandeep Singh, another resident.

Kulwinder Sohi, president, Municipal Council, Zirakpur, said, “I have already asked officials to rectify the problem. Hopefully, the water supply to the village will be restored soon.”
