The police are yet to make any significant progress in the case of a 22-year-old woman, who was raped by an auto-rickshaw driver and his two accomplices in Sector 53 yesterday.

Top police officials said the victim was not able to describe the accused properly. They have thus not been able to identify them or get their sketches made.

The police have obtained the footage of a CCTV installed at a petrol pump in Sector 42 where one of the accused is visible. However, the police have not been able to identify him. They are seeking help of auto unions in this regard.

However, police officials said that they would soon get a sketch of the accused made.

In the CCTV footage, the complete registration number of the auto is not visible.

The victim’s mobile phone was not found and the police believed that the accused might have taken it along or it has been left in the auto. Since it has not been switched on yet, it has not proved to be of any help for the police.

SSP Jagdale Nilambari Vijay said, “Barring a couple of SHOs, all others are investigating this case along with the entire crime branch.”

The victim, originally from Dehradun, was returning to her home in Mohali after her typing classes in Sector 37 when she boarded the auto-rickshaw. The auto-driver’s accomplices were already in the vehicle. The auto driver reportedly drove towards the forest area in Sector 53 where the trio raped her.

Profile auto drivers: Road safety crusader

Harman Sindhu of the ArriveSafe, an NGO, has slammed the police for not taking measures to prevent such crimes. He demanded that all auto drivers be profiled and display ID card. Besides, autos should have transparent sheets to ensure proper visibility.
