Chandigarh, August 30

Notorious snatcher Chinu, who is already facing trial for 24 snatchings and was arrested by the Chandigarh Police yesterday, was staying in Jind district in Haryana and used to visit the city for a day to commit snatchings and vehicle thefts. With his arrest, four more cases of snatching have been solved, besides a case of vehicle theft.

Chinu (24), alias Chinna, a resident of Dadu Majra and habitual snatcher, was brought to the District Courts for a hearing on March 24 this year when he fled from outside the court. Chinu was re-arrested by the crime branch in May. However, on June 9, he again managed to give the police the slip.

Navdeep Singh Brar, ASP (South), said the accused was arrested from near Ziri Mandi Chowk, Sector 39, while riding a stolen motorcycle. “Chinu has confessed to committing four snatchings in the area under the Sector 39 police station in June and July,” the ASP said.

Inspector Ranjodh Singh, SHO of the Sector 39 police station, said since the UT police were desperately looking for Chinu, he had shifted his base to Jind district in Haryana to prevent his arrest.

“He used to visit Chandigarh for a day or two and commit snatchings, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts and go back to Jind,” the Station House Officer (SHO) said.

The police claimed that the accused, apart from the worked-out cases, had confessed to committing seven more snatchings in different parts of Chandigarh.

Chinu was produced in the court, which remanded him in four-day police custody.

Committed crime single-handedly

Since, Chinu has already fled from the court twice, the Chandigarh police took the permission to handcuff the accused till he was in the custody of the police.   Chinu committed snatchings single-handedly on a motorcycle.
