Panjab University will offer the Chair to be set up in the honour of hockey legend Balbir Singh Senior to Olympics gold medallist Abhinav Bindra. To motivate students, the authorities will invite him to interact with sports persons on the campus. The proposal for the approval of the Chair will be tabled in the coming syndicate meeting on October 8.

A committee has drafted the proposal, which will be in the domain of the Department of Sports and Physical Education.

As per the report of the committee, the members felt that Abhinav Bindra’s achievements would motivate the sports fraternity, faculty and students of Panjab University. Bindra was the youngest participant from India in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and won an individual gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The committee was of the opinion that the Chair should be set up on the lines of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Chair. As per the proposal, the committee recommended that Bindra should get all facilities which prominent personalities of other Chairs were getting.

The Chairperson of the Department of Physical Education, Nandalal Singh said that after getting the nod from the higher authorities, an invitation will be sent to Abhinav Bindra.

He said this would be the first Chair which the Department of Physical Education was going to set up on the campus. He said after the approval, other prominent sports person would also be invited to motivate the students and faculty members on the campus.

The university provides facilities like business class air fare, car with driver (if required), accommodation in hotel or PU guest house (as per requirement), honorarium of Rs 5,000 per day and fare and hospitality provided to attendants (if required) to prominent persons who are holding various chairs of the PU.
