CHANDIGARH: After failing to get the desired response from the public on the WhatsApp number launched by the Chandigarh Police earlier this year to give information about the sale of drugs in the city, the police today extended the same number (7087239010) to post images, video recordings and information regarding illegal activities in their surroundings on WhatsApp.

Chandigarh, September 1

After failing to get the desired response from the public on the WhatsApp number launched by the Chandigarh Police earlier this year to give information about the sale of drugs in the city, the police today extended the same number (7087239010) to post images, video recordings and information regarding illegal activities in their surroundings on WhatsApp.

The WhatsApp number was launched on May 16 this year. However, the UT police failed to get the desired response on it. At least six people provided information regarding the use of drugs in the city, but the cases could not be established.

Sukhchain Singh Gill, SSP, Chandigarh, said they had decided to extend the WhatsApp number for providing information on any illegal activity in the city. “Residents can post pictures and videos after noticing any illegal activity in the city. They can also post pictures of police personnel indulging in corruption,” the SSP said.

The SSP said people could also post voice recording of policemen indulging in corruption. “The identity of the informant will be kept secret,” he said. The SSP said incidents of burglary and motor vehicles theft had decreased as compared to last year. While 80 incidents of burglary were reported till August 2014, 57 incidents were reported this year.

Similarly, while 428 vehicles were stolen till August 2014, 370 vehicles had been stolen this year.

Crime Stopper

The police have named the WhatsApp number Crime Stopper.
