Chandigarh, April 24

While the UT Vigilance Department is conducting a probe into overcharging by parking lot contractors across the city, two more parking lot contractors today surrendered their parking lots.

The contractors of the parking lots at Shanti Kunj, Sector 16, and Sector 9-D today surrendered their parking lots. They informed the MC that they cannot run these parking lots as the civic body staff were issuing challans to them every day.

With these two lots, 15 parking lots have so far been surrendered. On April 20, the MC had terminated the licences of two parking lots — at Elante Mall and Sukhna Lake — as the replies submitted by both contractors to the show-cause notices issued by the MC were not found to be satisfactory.

Similarly, on April 16, 11 parking lot contractors had submitted applications to surrender their parking lots following “continuous harassment by the public and media”.

In the auction of paid parking lots held in January this year, the MC had earned Rs 4.15 crore.

Vigilance probe

On April 8, UT Adviser Vijay Kumar Dev had marked a Vigilance probe into overcharging and other violations by paid parking lot contractors in the city. The probe was marked to Special Secretary, Home and Vigilance, SB Deepak Kumar. He was asked to find out if there was any nexus between the MC staff and the contractors.
