OBC students forge ahead in city

CHANDIGARH:Students belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) have scored better than those from the General Category in Chandigarh in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) conduced for Classes III, V and VIII.

Students belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) have scored better than those from the General Category in Chandigarh in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) conduced for Classes III, V and VIII.

However, the percentage of OBCs in the total sample was less—3.22 per cent  for Class VIII, 1.83 per cent for Class V and 1.02 per cent for Class III.

The survey was conducted throughout the country on November 13, 2017, for both government and government-aided schools.

Multiple test booklets were used with 45 questions for Classes III and V and 60 questions for Class VIII. These had questions regarding environmental studies, mathematics, language, science and social science.

According to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), this was the largest assessment survey conducted in the country. Around 2.2 million students of 1.10 lakh schools were assessed.

For Class III, 2,853 students of 113 schools were covered in Chandigarh. In environmental studies (EVS), students correctly answered over 74 per cent of the questions with those belonging to the OBCs (75.17 per cent) performing better than those from the General Category (74.01 per cent). Close to 30 per cent students were not able to identify relationship among family members. 

As many as 84.3 per cent of the students were able to give opinion on good or bad touch and stereotypes for tasks/play/food in the family with respect to gender. 

In the language test, students could answer 74.49  per cent of the questions with those from the General Category (74.59 per cent) marginally ahead of those belonging to the OBCs (74.48 per cent). Close to 26 per cent students were not able to read printed scripts on  classroom walls. 

In mathematics, students could answer 70.77 per cent of the questions with OBC students (75.86 per cent) outscoring those from the General Category (70.83 per cent).

According to the MHRD, intervention is required when it comes to measuring length and distance using standard units like centimetres or metres.

 Only 63.37 per cent of the tested students were able to solve daily life problems using addition and subtraction of three digit numbers. 

For Class V, 113 schools with 2,955 students were covered. In the EVS, 67.81 per cent of the questions were answered correctly with those belonging to the Scheduled Tribes (STs) scoring the highest (76.67 per cent), followed by children from the OBCs (70.62 per cent) and the General Category (67.95 per cent).

While establishing links among terrain, climate,  resources and cultural life, just 36.61 per cent could answer correctly, while on materials, activities for features/properties such as shape, taste, color, texture, sound and traits, just 44.95 per cent answered correctly. With regard to spatial quantities (distance, area, volume and weight etc ) and time in simple standard units besides verifying and using simple tools, 40 per cent couldn’t answer correctly.

In the language test, OBC students (73.09  per cent) scored better than those from the General Category (69.01 per cent).

In mathematics, OBC students (66.79  per cent) outperformed their counterparts from the General Category (64.50 per cent).

For Class VIII, 107 schools with 2,888 students were covered. In the language test, OBC students (62.51 per cent) scored better than those from the General Category (61.54 per cent) while 61.10 per cent questions could be answered. About 39 per cent students couldn’t read with comprehension and identify characters, main idea and sequence of ideas or events. 

In science, just 51.47 per cent of the questions could be answered with those belonging to the OBCs (53.69 per cent) scoring better than those from the General Category (51.79 per cent).

Just 40.11 per cent students could construct models using material from surroundings while only 42.64 per cent could explain scientific processes and phenomenon.

Over 54  per cent couldn’t classify materials and organisms. Over 54 per cent couldn’t construct a simple investigation to seek answers. About 48 per cent couldn’t apply scientific concepts into their day-to-day lives.    

In social studies, only 53.01 questions could be answered. OBC students (53.62 per cent) were marginally ahead of those from the General Category (53.5 per cent).

Over 66 per cent students couldn’t describe the functioning of rural and urban local bodies in sectors like health and education.

About 59 per cent couldn’t describe the formation of landforms. Over 58 per cent couldn’t locate the distribution of important minerals on the world map. 

About the poor performance of Class VIII students, District Education Officer Anujit Kaur said, “A lot of students from private schools take admission in Class VIII at government schools. They are usually weak students. But we will intervene and support wherever required. We will improve our score.”
