Chandigarh: A Pakistani national, who was shot at by security forces five days ago, ended up losing his right leg. Gaffar Ahmed of Kasur district in Pakistan was operated upon at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on Wednesday. As per the information available, his leg was amputated after doctors failed to stop the spread of infection.  His condition is stated to be stable.The Pakistani national was arrested on February 10 while he was trying to smuggle heroin into the Indian side of the border. While Gaffar was shot at in leg, his accomplice was gunned down by the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. Initially, Gaffar was rushed to a government hospital in Amritsar from where he referred to the PGI for treatment. TNS

PCR team arrests two vehicle thieves

Chandigarh: Two vehicle thieves were nabbed by PCR staff at the Industrial Area while the accused were stealing petrol from a motorcycle. Sources said PCR personnel Ashok and Satbir were on patrol duty at the Industrial Area when they saw two persons stealing petrol from a bike. The cops nabbed the accused, identified as Ajay Kumar and Suraj, both residents of Colony No. 4.  Further interrogation of the accused revealed that the motorcycle they were riding was stolen from near a government school in Colony No. 4.  The PCR personnel also recovered some tools used by the accused to steal two-wheelers. A case against the accused has been registered at the Industrial Area police station and an investigation initiated into it. TNS

Minor’s rape accused sent to police remand

Chandigarh: A local court on Wednesday sent the accused in the rape case of a 13-year-old girl in Mani Majra to one-day police remand. The accused has been stated to be known to the victim’s mother, the police told the court. He has been mentioned as the victim’s ‘uncle’ in the FIR. The police had sought the remand to recover the mobile phone of the accused to verify if he had taken any photo or made a video of the incident.  The minor girl was raped by the 45-year-old for over four months, the police informed.  The Class VII student had narrated her ordeal to her mother on Monday night. The police said the girl told her mother that the accused used to take her to a godown and rape her. He used to threaten her, due to which she had not informed her mother about it earlier. TNS

Mauli Jagran murder: Two in judicial custody

Chandigarh: A local court on Wednesday sent two accused in the murder case of Pawan Saho (24) to judicial custody. Saho was stabbed to death allegedly by Raju, Rahul and two juveniles at Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, on Saturday night. Saho used to work as a cook at a private hotel in Panchkula. Raju and Rahul were sent to juvenile home on Monday. The victim was returning home from work on a bicycle when the accused stopped him. He was thrashed and stabbed in the chest with a sharp weapon, leading to his death.  The police said the thrashing incident was recorded on a CCTV camera installed near the spot. On the complaint of the victim’s brother Lakshman Saho, a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC was registered against unknown persons. TNS

Chandigarh: The police have arrested a Ram Darbar Phase-II resident, identified as Pritam, for eve-teasing and threatening a woman. The incident took place on February 12. — TNS

Railways resumes two trains

Chandigarh: The Railways on Wednesday resumed Unchahar Express and Chandigarh-Jaipur Express. These two trains were cancelled for over a month due to fog. Railway officials also inspected the progress of double tracking from Chandigarh to Ambala. — TNS

Mohali: A blood donation camp was organised in Mohali on Wednesday. It was organised by Orane International Private Limited in collaboration with Fortis Healthcare. Over 60-80 people took part in the drive. — TNS

Hit by train, man dies

Kharar: An unidentified person in his mid-30s died after he was hit by Jan Shatabdi train near Mohali railway station about 8.30 pm on Tuesday. The police said the deceased was hit by the train that was going from Delhi to Una. The man, who was seriously injured, was taken to the GMCH-32, where he succumbed to his injuries. No document has been recovered from the deceased. The body has been kept in the mortuary at the GMCH-32 for identification. OC

8 in fray for MC bypoll

Kharar: Eight candidates are in fray for the by-elections of Ward No. 14 of the Kharar MC to be held on February 24. On the last day of filing nomination papers on Wednesday, six candidates filed their papers at the office of the Kharar SDM, who is also the Returning Officer for the bypoll. Two candidates had filed their papers on Monday, taking the total tally to 8. The candidates who had filed their papers are Sudhir Guleria and Seema Gulleria (both from BJP), Varinder Singh, Sohan Singh, Mohan Singh, Vinod Kumar, Surinder Singh and Jasvir Kaur (all Independents). Scrutiny of nomination papers would be done on Thursday. OC
