Panel formed for disqualifying former Senate member from contesting elections

CHANDIGARH:The Senate has formed a committee to decide action against former Senator Munish Verma for cheating the varsity while deputing three persons as centre and assistant superintendents in the 2014 annual exams.

The Senate has formed a committee to decide action against former Senator Munish Verma for cheating the varsity while deputing three persons as centre and assistant superintendents in the 2014 annual exams. The committee would decide whether any voting was required to take action against him.

About the issue

Officiating principal of MR Government College, Fazilka, had forwarded his recommendation to appoint three persons as centre superintendent and assistant centre superintendents to the university. He had forwarded it through then Senator Munish Verma for 2014 annual examinations.

These three people were shown as assistant professors of the college whereas they were not. As per rules only teaching staff could be recommended for exam duties.

When a flying squad of the university visited the centre, it recommended for removal of all the three on April 4, 2014. A five-member committee was constituted. The inquiry committee found out that college principal e-mailed a blank document bearing his signature and seal of his office to Verma which he misused for appointing centre superintendent and two assistant centre superintendents.

After that another committee was formed which called for his ouster. Meanwhile, he lost the Senate election in 2016. On Sunday, some members suggested that he should be removed from the rolls of graduate constituency so that he couldn’t contest again. But rules said it needed the concurrence of 2/3rd members of whole senate.

“It needed the concurrence of 2/3rd members of the whole Senate and not just those who are present today,” said Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India.

After that the Senate authorised the Vice-Chancellor to form the committee.
