Panjab University has proposed to the Chandigarh Administration to hold the Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections in the last week of August this year. Sources in the Administration confirmed that a communication had been received from the university authorities for early elections.

In the proposal, the authorities have pleaded for early elections to allow less time to student parties to campaign on the campus. Last year, the elections were held on September 5. The university authorities have also sent a communication to the Chandigarh Police for approval of the election schedule.

At a recent meeting of the election committee, it was decided that the student elections should be held in the last week of August as was the earlier practice on the campus.

PU Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover said the university was committed to holding elections provided there was no violence on the campus. He said the Chandigarh Administration had to determine the scheduled of the elections.

After approval from the Chandigarh Administration, the elections will be notified eight days before the scheduled date by the university authorities.

Number of voters

According to the records of the university, there are around 14,000 voters on the campus who will caste there vote in the elections.

Parties in the fray

There are 17 student parties, which are likely to be in the fray for the council elections this year.

Executive committee

The executive committee comprises the president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary and five other members. The four office-bearers — president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary — are elected directly by the students.

Five members of the executive committee will be elected by members of the students’ council from among themselves.
