Chandigarh, May 27
With just four days left for the deadline to end for depositing property tax with 20 per cent rebate, the Municipal Corporation has collected approximately Rs 17 crore as tax from owners of properties so far.
The MC had announced a 20 per cent rebate for taxpayers in the case of residential properties and 10 per cent in the case of commercial properties. The rebate period was of two months, from April 1 to May 31. Sources said the MC had decided not to extend the date for availing of the rebate beyond May 31. An MC officer said those who failed to pay the amount within this stipulated time would have to pay 25 per cent penalty and 12 per cent interest on the entire amount to the civic body.
RK Garg, a resident of Sector 27, demanded that the date for availing of the rebate should be extended.
He said records of the MC were not readily available online. The process was under way and the last date for availing of the rebate should be extended till June 30 to enable residents to pay the correct property tax as per the latest calculations done by the MC. He said when residents were paying taxes in advance, charging penalty and interest was not justified.
