The Postgraduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, was established in 1982. It imparts education to more than 4,000 students in commerce, humanities, sciences and computer applications.

A bouquet of 58 courses, which are offered by the college, include doctorate programme in zoology, master’s degree programmes in nine subjects, postgraduate diploma programmes in six subjects, bachelor’s degree programmes in 13 subjects and honours programmes in 18 subjects (commerce/ humanities/ science).

This year, the college is offering honours in five courses - music (instrumental), dance, physics, chemistry and zoology. It is also starting add-on career-oriented programmes such as diploma in music (instrumental) and (vocal) and an advanced diploma in cosmetology from this year.

The students can avail themselves of 11 career/job-oriented add-on courses and gain dual degree on graduating. Varied courses available are animation and graphics; bioinformatics; cosmetology; disaster management; environmental auditing; entrepreneurship; event management; mass communication and video production; music (vocal and instrumental); tourism and travel management; web designing and multimedia.

“A student can opt from a platter of 390 subjects in humanities and 13 in sciences. Our college is the first government college in the city to be approved as a research centre in zoology by Panjab University. At present, 54 research scholars are pursuing PhD under the guidance of the faculty,” said Prof Binu Dogra, principal, PGGC-42

The college also accommodates a research centre in life science and a day care centre, under RUSA. It has recently been selected under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan — a national programme to involve higher education institutions in the sustained development of village clusters.
