PGI Director Prof Jagat Ram while demanding a complete ban on the bursting of crackers said the restrictions of lighting crackers in three hours, from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, on Diwali proved to be no deterrent.
“Crackers in large numbers which can take days to burn were destroyed in only three hours due to the restrictions,” said Prof Jagat Ram. He suggested that like the burning of effigies of demon kings on Dasehra, crackers should also be burnt at a common place.
“In European countries also, people gather at a common ground to watch display of firecrackers, but in our country, children’s life is put at risk as mostly they burn crackers during celebrations,” said Prof Jagat Ram.
“Bursting of crackers is a job of an expert. A person should wear protective gears and cover their eyes while lighting crackers,” he added.
