Patiala, January 16

As many as 27 file nomination papers from eight Assembly constituencies in Patiala as the elections scene heats up. Till today a total of 30 candidates hailing from various political parties have filed their nominations for the state Assembly elections scheduled to be held on February 4.

While Capt Amarinder Singh is all set to file his papers from Patiala tomorrow, his arch rival Sukhbir Badal has also planned a political rally in support of party candidate JJ Singh, before he files his paper.

Prominent among those who filed their papers today included cabinet minister Surjit Singh Rakhra, incumbent Patiala II Congress MLA Brahm Mohindra, AAP candidate from same segment Karanvir Singh Tiwana, sitting Congress from Rajpura Hardyal Kamboj, Kuldeep Kaur Tohra from Sanour and her SAD rival HS Chandumajra, SAD candidate Kabir Das from Nabha and Congress candidate from Ghanour Madan Lal Jalalpur filed their papers. SAD MLA from Shurtana Vaninder Kaur Loomba and Congress candidate Nirmal Singh also filed their papers.

A total of two from Nabha, five from Patiala II, four from Rajpura, two from Ghanour, four from Sanour, two from Patiala I, two from Samana and six from Shatrana filed their nomination papers.

AAP candidate comes on cycle to file papers

Striking a chord with the masses, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Patiala (Rural) Karanvir Singh Tiwana, along with his supporters, reached on a bicycle to file his nomination papers here on Monday. He paid his obeisance at gurdwara Dukhnivaran Sahib and Kali Devi temple before filing his papers with returning officer Deepak Bhatia. His wife Gurjeet Kaur Tiwana filed papers as covering candidates. Addressing his supporters after filing the papers, Tiwana said he chose to ride a bicycle as it was symbolic of aam aadmi. He said he himself was from a middle class family and could relate to the problems of commoners unlike those who rode in helicopters. — TNS
