Patiala, June 17

The Punjab General Category Welfare Federation and the All India Equality Forum on Sunday organised a protest against giving reservation in promotions to Scheduled caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) employees.

The protesters also submitted letters addressed to the Centre Government and state governments on this matter. Members of the protesting unions said the government was issuing orders for reservation in giving promotion to SC/ST employees in an undemocratic way.

The rally was led by Jaswant Singh Dhaliwal, state chief of the federation.

He said most of the employees of general category and of other backward classes (OBC) are opposing the bill.

Sukhpreet Singh, Secretary of the All India Equality Forum, said: “The government has already a provision to provide benefit to the SC and ST category people. Now, the same provision should not be extended to them in giving promotions.”
