PU Syndicate to take call on 10% fee hike

CHANDIGARH: The PU Syndicate will take a call on 10 per cent hike in fee at teaching departments for 2018-19 with minor reduction in some cases.

The PU Syndicate will take a call on 10 per cent hike in fee at teaching departments for 2018-19 with minor reduction in some cases. The PU has 78 teaching departments. The Syndicate meeting is slated for March 30.

Earlier, it was proposed that for all traditional and professional courses, the fee would be enhanced at 10 per cent with minimum annual increase of Rs 1,000. But with the intervention of fellows Dr Rabinder Nath Sharma and Dr Subhash Sharma, the minimum hike has been reduced to Rs 750 per annum.

The tuition fee of all self-financing courses, except that of MBA at the University Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS) and MPharma in Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical Analysis would be enhanced by five per cent for ongoing students and by 10 per cent for new students.

The tuition fee and other charges of all courses of the University School of Open Learning (USOL) would be enhanced by 10 per cent with minimum annual hike at Rs 1,000.

The user and maintenance charges of all courses would be enhanced by 10 per cent.

The examination fee of all courses is also enhanced by 10 per cent subject to maximum of Rs 200 per semester. For courses where dissertation is to be evaluated by external examiner, a hike of Rs 1,000 per semester is proposed.

Earlier, the examination fee of PhD, DLit, DSc was proposed to be hiked from Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000. But with the intervention of Dr Rabinder Nath Sharma and Dr Subhash Sharma, it has been reduced to Rs 14,000 now.

The entire fee of PhD course from the date of enrolment to submission of fee has been hiked from Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000.

Chairperson of Pharmacy for 49% reduction of fee

The University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) chairperson, Kanwaljit Chopra, has requested for reduction of fee for MPharma in Pharmaceutical Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance from Rs 2.92 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh per annum. She cited that income from both the courses is around Rs 60.90 lakh whereas the expenditure is Rs 39.15 lakh per annum. Both the courses are being run in self-financing mode. The Syndicate has to take a final call on March 30.

Fee hike of 5% for constituent colleges

The PU has increased fee in constituent colleges by five per cent for 2018-19. The university has six constituent colleges located at Sikhwala (Sri Muktsar Sahib), Balachaur (SBS Nagar), Nihalsingh Wala (Moga), Dharamkot (Moga), Mokham Khan Wala (Ferozepur) and Guru Harsahai (Ferozepur).

During the deliberations on the issue on November 20, 2017, it came out that constituent colleges have been facing issues of non-availability of NET-qualified faculty, non-attending students, non-reimbursement of fee of SC students by the Punjab government, delegation of powers to the principals and problems being faced by them in regard to the works to be got done through the office of XEN, PU.

The fee has been enhanced to augment resources for constituent colleges.

Teachers upset over new appointments

  • In a surprise move, PU Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover replaced Dean, International Students, Deepti Gupta with Prof Promila Pathak. Prof Gupta had completed her two-year tenure and had got one-year extension. Prof Gupta's tenure was to end on November 13 this year. She is also the chairperson of the Department of English. Prof Pathak will take over from April. The Syndicate will take a call on appointment on March 30.
  • The VC appointed Prof SK Sharma of the Department of Statistics as new director of the Population Research Centre (PRC). However, the Department of Sociology protested over the decision. The present director of the PRC, Prof Sherry Sabharwal, is retiring on March 31. “Director of Population Research Centre has always been from the Department of Sociology. We are not consulted at all. Prof Victor D'Souza of our department had set up the PRC. We even met the VC on March 21. He did not consider it. He said that decision couldn't be reversed," said Prof Kumool Abbi, chairperson, Department of Sociology.
