Patiala, February 12
People had a tough time commuting through some waterlogged roads after a couple of hours of heavy rain this morning. Office-goers were stuck in traffic jams during the rush hour.
The water level in some areas was almost knee-length. A parking lot at Chotti Baradari was brimming with rainwater, making it difficult for people to take out their vehicles from the facility. The problem was acute in low-lying areas of the city.
Residents also complained of clogged drains as water spilled out of manholes during rain. Storm-water pipelines in the city were clogged because of accumulation of non-biodegradable waste and debris.
According to the experts, drainage system of the city was designed for 25ml/hr of rainfall. More rainfall led to overflowing sewers.
The situation near the bus stand underpass and surrounding areas was pathetic due to waterlogging. The worst-affected areas were Tripuri, Model Town, Police Station Sadar, Raghu Majra and near Bank Square in Chotti Baradari.
The situation returned to normalcy in the evening.
Shagandeep Singh, a student, said, “Only a few hours of rain put commuters to great inconvenience. I hope the authorities concerned improve the drainage system before the monsoon.”
