A regional conference on environment will be held at Panjab University here on Sunday.

It is being organised by the Global Platform for Environment (GPE), an NGO, comprising a team of advocates and environmentalists.

Addressing a press conference, Justice Swatanter Kumar, former chairman, National Green Tribunal (NGT), said: “With an objective to mull over and find a solution to critical issues related to conservation of water, combating air pollution and managing solid waste, various NGOs, along with pollution control boards, state governments and stakeholders, will come together for the first time in the tricity. International representatives of UNEP and the IUCN will also take part.”

Reeta Kohli, senior advocate, Serving in Organisations for Legal Initiatives (SIOLI); Neelima Kamrah, Registrar, KIIT Group of Colleges; and Sunita Sibal, a social activist; are part of the team.

“The time has come when we ought to realise hard realities. All these advancements in the field of science of technology would be of no use if we cannot save the very place where we are living — earth,” said Reeta.

It is noteworthy that SIOLI will be working effectively for environmental awareness in states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and J&K and the UT. The conference will start with an inaugural session, followed by three technical sessions and a valedictory session.
