Rotary Club sends sweets to light up Diwali on border

CHANDIGARH:The Rotary Club has sent 4.5 quintals of sweets worth Rs 16.5 lakh for the soldiers deployed on the border on the occasion of Diwali.

The Rotary Club has sent 4.5 quintals of sweets worth Rs 16.5 lakh for the soldiers deployed on the border on the occasion of Diwali. The first consignment was sent today.

This is the second consecutive year that the club has decided to send sweets to jawans in the border areas of Leh, Ladakh and Saichen. The club dispatched 4,000 sweet boxes with Diwali greetings, informed club president Rtn PS Matharoo. MP Kirron Kher flagged-off the truck load of sweets during a function at Rotary Club in Chandigarh. Kher appreciated the efforts of the club for the thoughtful gesture.

The idea od sending sweets to soldiers was conceived last year by Usha Saboo, wife of former Rotary International president Rajendra K Saboo.

Kawal Bedi, chairperson of the project, informed that the club members came together and generously contributed to make the festival more meaningful. She thanked all the  ‘Rotarians’ who had contributed for this cause. She also thanked Gopal sweets for preparing the sweets.

The initiative 

The Rotary Club has dispatched 4,000 boxes of sweets with Diwali greetings. This is the second consecutive year that the club has decided to send sweets to jawans in the border areas of Leh, Ladakh and Siachen.
