Chandigarh, April 22

Unidentified thieves made off with a safe containing gold ornaments worth around Rs 50 lakh from a house in Sector 8 on Saturday night. The safe was later recovered by the police.

Sources said information regarding the theft was received around 10 am at the Police Control Room.

The police visited the spot where the complainant, Damanpreet Singh Sekhon, reported that his safe had ancestral gold ornaments worth around Rs 50 lakh.

Police officials, including UT SSP Nilambari Jagdale Vijay and DSP (Central) Krishan Kumar, visited the spot. A CFSL team, along with a sniffer dog, visited the house.

On seeing police personnel around the house, a driver, Ghanshyam, residing in the neighbourhood in Sector 8, informed the police that he had found a safe lying on the back lane of his house. The driver, taking it for an inverter, picked the safe with the help of his family members and brought it to his house.

The police immediately recovered the safe after which the complainant, Damanpreet, checked the safe, which was locked. “The complainant opened the safe and found all valuables were safe,” said a police official.

The police said the accused who stole the safe could not open it and left it in the back lane. “We are verifying the statements of all suspects, including the driver, Ghanshyam,” said a police official.

Police officials are scrutinising the CCTV footage of the area and the call detail records of the suspects. A case has been registered at the Sector 3 police station.

Thieves couldn’t carry it far

The thieves entered the house from the rear door on the first floor. They then picked the safe, weighing 50 kg, but were not able to carry it far. The complainant is a businessman.
