Mohali, July 20
Waking up to the safety of cyclists and non-motorised vehicles, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has decided to construct cycle tracks on the busy roads of the town on the pattern of the City Beautiful.
The MC has identified three roads — YPS Chowk-Kumbhra Chowk, 200-foot-wide Airport Road and furniture market-Mohali Judicial Complex — where cycle tracks will be constructed initially.
Mohali MC Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman said expression of interest for the proposed cycle tracks and junctions from architects were being invited. “We will prefer architects who have already successfully executed similar projects,” said Dhiman.
The preparation of a detailed project report and a feasibility report after conducting a survey in this regard will be the responsibility of the architects or their firms.
Dhiman said the architects or interested firms had to submit the expression of interest by August 10.
“We have decided to construct at least three cycle tracks by the end of this year,” said Dhiman.
The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) had also planned to construct cycle tracks alongside seven main roads in the town around a year and a half ago. It wanted to widen the roads to create space for the cycle tracks, but the plan remained on paper only.
Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh said the cycle tracks would help check accidents.
