Chandigarh, September 29

The green belt adjoining Vivek High School in Sector 38 will not be converted into a parking lot. The decision was taken by Mayor Arun Sood after holding a meeting with residents of Sector 38  today.

A letter signed by nearly 700 area residents stating that they were in favour of the green belt was placed at the meeting. Yesterday, at an MC House meeting, the Mayor had showed a letter signed by 148 people, including parents of students studying in Vivek High School, claiming that they wanted a parking lot at the place.

The Mayor said a majority of the residents were of the view that the green belt should not be converted into a parking lot. The MC would now make permanent amendments to the drawing of the green belt and would accordingly write to the Chief Architect’s office, he said.

Earlier today, a delegation of residents of Sector 38 made a representation to MC Commissioner B Purushartha regarding their signature campaign against the decision of the MC to construct a parking lot on the green belt.

Yesterday, the Congress had gheraoed Mayor Arun Sood and had staged a protest outside the MC office in this regard.

At the meeting, the media was not allowed to enter. The meeting started at 5.30 pm and continued till 6.30 pm. After the meeting, the Mayor and residents gave statements to mediapersons.
