Chandigarh, July 30

A 78-year-old woman became the seventh target of bike-borne chain snatchers in four days this morning. Her gold chain worth Rs one lakh was taken away by miscreants from near her house in Sector 38 when she had gone for morning walk.

The two have been caught on CCTV cameras which were installed outside the house, but till the filing of the report, the city police have not been able to make a headway. The incident took place at 7.30 am when Satya Sharma was walking near her house. The CCTV footage shows an unidentified pillion rider who got down from a Pulsar motorcycle and started following her on foot. As she bent down to pluck a flower, the man came from behind and snatched away her chain. 

Before she could realise what had happened, he quickly got on the pillion rider’s seat of the Pulsar motorcycle of his accomplice, who was waiting for him on his bike and fled . “It all happened in seconds before I could raise the alarm, the two sped away,” the old woman told Chandigarh Tribune while recounting the incident.

Her son Shailender, said, “She is scared. I told her not to worry about anything. We have given the CCTV footage to the police for examination and hope they are arrested soon”.

Woman’s purse snatched 

Shilpa Sahani (44), a resident of Sector 44, reported to the police that two unidentified men snatched away her purse. The incident took place at around 9:30 pm on Friday when she had gone to the market. The purse contained cash and documents. 

Anti-snatching nakas set up across city

In view of the rising chain snatching incidents, the UT police on Saturday laid anti-snatching nakas across the city .“A total of 40 nakas were put up. A total of 1,909 vehicles were checked while 78 challans were issued and 12 vehicles were impounded,” said SP (Law and Order) Roshan Lal.
