The impact of yesterday’s rainfall was felt even today as waterlogging was seen at several places. Mud has accumulated at the places where there was two to three-ft water yesterday. People are of the view that constructing colonies in the area might have brought huge investments, but building boundary walls and high-level roads had obstructed the natural flow of water and it had proved disastrous for residents of this area.

HS Mavi, president of the Panchayat Union, Punjab, said encroachments by colonisers and influential persons on the land of natural flow of water was the reason behind waterlogging here and the surrounding areas. He said the administration had done nothing to clean choked drains.

There was a flood-like situation in Desu Majra village as a culvert near Government School, Desu Majra, was blocked by the firm that is constructing a flyover on Kharar-Mohali road.

Jora Singh Bhullar, former sarpach of Chapar Chiri village, said the condition of the village and the nearby areas was worst and a lot of water had accumulated nearby.

Sandeep Tiwari, Executive Officer of the Kharar Municipal Council, said the council would take steps to clean all storm water lines from downstream to upward. “We will write a letter to the Drainage Department to provide us the list of places of natural flow of water in the past. We will try to remove encroachment on these places,” he said.
