Shimla resident held with charas

CHANDIGARH: The Narcotics Control Bureau arrested a Shimla resident with 1.8-kg charas and 0.950-kg opium.



Chandigarh: The Narcotics Control Bureau arrested a Shimla resident with 1.8-kg charas and 0.950-kg opium. Rajeev Chauhan was arrested from Zirakpur. The contraband was kept in a bag which was recovered from the vehicle of the accused. The accused brought charas from Theog in Shimla and supplied it in Zirakpur and Chandigarh. Chauhan is said to be involved in drug smuggling for the past one year. This is the 64th seizure made by the bureau, Chandigarh zonal unit, this year. TNS

CHB e-auctions two flats  

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Housing Board has e-auctioned two residential properties. While a two-bedroom  flat was  sold   for Rs 76,35,949, the EWS one went for  Rs  22, 83, 800.  Meanwhile, the  CHB  has  extended the  date for the e-auction of the remaining properties till October 31. TNS

Oshima Raikhy dies at 96

Chandigarh: Social activist Oshima Raikhy (96) passed away here on Thursday. Raikhy, who remained the president of the Punjab Istri Sabha Relief Trust for 55 years, was committed to the welfare of women and children. She believed that every child deserved to be educated and which is why she founded the Aruna Asaf Ali Trust, a press release said. The activist also served as the vice-president of the national Federation of Indian Women since 1960, vice-president of the Association of Social Health of India and vice-president of the Bharat Scouts and Guides Association. For her commendable work, she was conferred the Help Age India’s  ‘Golden Award’.  TNS

Stolen bike recovered, 2 held

Lalru: The police have arrested two persons and recovered a stolen motorcycle from their possession. The accused have been identified as Amritpal Singh and Gurmeet Singh, both residents of Ballopur village, near Lalru. Mahipal Singh of Ballopur village had lodged a written complaint with the police that his motorcycle (HR-01-AM-3767) was stolen from outside his house. Mahipal had mentioned in his complaint that Amritpal Singh of the same village had stolen his motorbike, following which an FIR was registered against the accused. The police on Friday recovered the stolen motorcycle and arrested Amritpal. During interrogation, the accused confessed to have committed the crime with his close pal Gurmeet Singh who also resides in Ballopur village. The police later also arrested Gurmeet.  Both accused were produced before a court today where police had sought one day-remand of both accused. OC

One dies in road mishap

Kharar:  Gurpreet Singh, a resident of the nearby Hasanpur village, died in a road accident on the Gurdwara Akali Daftar road on Thursday evening. ASI Nidhan Singh of the Kharar City police said as per the statement of his family members, proceedings under Section 174 CrPC have been initiated. He said the deceased used to come here for pursing IELTS. When he was returning home on his motorcycle, he suddenly met with an accident and died on the spot. A friend of the deceased informed the family members about the mishap. OC

Meena is Ropar Commissioner

Ropar: Varinder Kumar Meena took over as the new commissioner of the Ropar division here on Firday. After taking over the charge, he convened a meeting of officials from Ropar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) districts. Meena directed the officials to dispose of cases related to land record promptly so that people could get justice. Meena said he would strive to ensure clean administration in the Rupnagar division.
