Chandigarh: The water supply to the city will be affected on Thursday. According to the MC, due to repair work to plug a leakage on the Phase II line near Daun Majra, there will be no pumping of raw water from the Kajauli waterworks, Phase II, to the Sector 39 waterworks. The water supply will be normal from 4 am to 8.30 am while in the evening, the water supply will be at low pressure from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm. TNS

30-year-old ends his life

Dera Bassi: A 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence here on Wednesday. The victim has left a suicide note in which he did not blame anyone for the extreme step and stated that he was upset with his life, police sources said. The deceased has been identified as Saurabh Kumar, a resident of Bhankarpur. Amanpreet Kaur Brar, investigating officer, said the victim was alone at home when he committed suicide. The incident came to light when the victim’s father, who had gone to meet his daughter in the village, returned home and found his son hanging from the ceiling fan. He informed the police, who took the body into their possession. The police have initiated inquest proceedings in the matter. OC

1.75-quintal polythene seized

Chandigarh: Around 1.75 quintals of polythene bags were seized by the enforcement staff during a raid on Wednesday conducted under the supervision of Kriti Garg, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Central). The raids were conducted at Sectors 8, 16 and 23 to seize polythene bags being used by hawkers and shopkeepers.The seized material has been handed over to the garbage processing plant in Sector 25. Garg said the raid was part of a campaign being run by the DC's office to enforce the ban on polythene bags in the city. TNS

One-day workshop

Patiala: Technical Training Institute (TTI), Patiala, has been provided the task of imparting training to PSPCL officials. As per the training policy, officials are being imparted 5-day training in a year. It was felt that some categories of employees were always left out of the training schedule as the focus was mainly on technical/revenue trainings. However, in a team effort, for the success of the organisation all members play a vital and important role. In an effort to train officers, a one-day workshop for category ‘D’ employees of PSPCL was held at the TTI, Patiala, on Tuesday. The workshop was inaugurated by the Dy CE/Employee Development, Bhupinder Singh, and the Principal, TTI, Er Surinder Loomba. The valedictory session was conducted under the vision of RP Pandove, Director Administration, PSPCL team, in the overall growth of organisation. He also appreciated the efforts of training wing in this regard. TNS

2 inspectors promoted as DSP

Chandigarh: Two UT Inspectors Hardit Singh and Amrao Singh have been promoted to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the UT Administration. The promotion orders of the two officers were released on Wednesday. Hardit is presently posted at the Police Lines in Sector 26 while Amrao is posted with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The names of both the inspectors were forwarded to the office of the UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore on May 3.  TNS

Take all garbage: NGT to Jaypee

Chandigarh: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday directed the Jaypee Group for strict compliance of its order of taking garbage. The tribunal further said if its order was not followed, then action would be taken against the company. The group runs a garbage processing plant at Dadu Majra and it was said the firm was refusing to take the whole garbage supplied to it.  TNS

Graft: Police remand for cop

Chandigarh: The Head Constable  (HC) arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths while accepting bribe was produced in the court on Wednesday and sent to one-day police remand.Accused Ram Kumar posted at the Sarangpur police station, was arrested on Tuesday while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a woman who was named in an FIR of voluntarily causing grievous hurt. . Minimum wages  revised 

Chandigarh: The UT Administration has revised the  rates  of minimum wages  for workers.The minimum rates of wages for each category of employees have been increased by Rs. 84  per   month.  The previous average cost of living index numbers was 1420 points for the quarter ending  September 30, 2016,  which has   increased  by12 points  during the quarter . Mercury breaches 40°C mark

Chandigarh: The mercury  again breached the 40 degree Celsius mark. The maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 40 degree Celsius and the minimum 26 degree Celsius on Wednesday. The heatwave is likely to intensify with the temperature likely to reach 42 degree Celsius by the weekend.  TNS

Woman charged with fraud

Chandigarh: A case of cheating has been registered against a woman on the complaint of a Chandigarh resident who alleged that the woman duped him of Rs 20 lakh on the pretext of sending his son abroad. The police said Jaswinder Singh Gill alleged that he had paid the money to Shilpa Aggarwal,  for sending his son to Canada.  TNS

GMSH-16 staff stage protest

Chandigarh: Employees of the GMSH, Sector 16, continued their protest on the second day, fearing that rates of the meal served in the hospital canteen will increase after the new tender was floated by Red Cross Society. They protested for around two hours and sought cancellation of the tender. They raised slogans against the Chandigarh Administration, hospital authorities and the chairman of Red Cross Society. The protesters also demanded that vacant posts of all categories be filled at the earliest. They also sought re-evaluation typing test for data entry operators appointed at the CHC-22 and the CHC-45. Vijay, one of the protesters, said two of them would sit on a hunger strike on Thursday. TNS

Man booked for snatching

Kharar: The Kharar police have registered a case under Section 379B of the IPC against Manpreet Singh, a resident of Sahauran village, on the charge of snatching gold earrings of a resident of Jhungian Road, Kharar. The complainant, Gurmeet Kaur, informed the police that she was returning home from the market when the incident took place. When she reached near Janta Chowk, the accused came on a motorcycle and drove away after snatching the earrings. OC 

Accused sent to police custody

Chandigarh: Manish, who had fired the first shot at Meet, a bouncer, was sent to three-day police custody on Wednesday. Manish was arrested from the Dera Bassi bus stand on Tuesday. Mansa Devi police station SHO Mahendar Singh said Manish has informed them about the country-made pistol and mobile phone  used by him. Meet was shot dead outside a temple in Saketri on May 8. The SHO informed that the hearing to obtain production warrant of Dalbir Singh, alias Darbara, is scheduled for May 30. TNS

1 held for selling duplicate paint

Zirakpur: The local police arrested a trader on the charge of selling a duplicate paint. The police also seized 13 buckets of duplicate paint. The accused has been identified as Kanwaljeet Singh, who runs a shop in Sharma Estate, Zirakpur. Police sources said the complaint in this regard was lodged by officials of Asian Paints, who alleged that Kanwaljeet was selling a duplicate paint, bearing a logo of the company. The accused was granted bail on Wednesday. OC
