Chandigarh, June 21

High drama was witnessed during the entrance test of Panjab University’s (PU) three-year law degree course today when a complaint was received against a candidate stating that he was using a mobile phone during the exam. In a statement issued late this evening, the PU spokesperson said, “Vikramjit Singh has been rendered disqualified for the three-year law admission test held on June 21, 2015.” PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Grover’s sudden visit to the exam venue (immediately after receiving the complaint) led to curiosity among onlookers while the accused candidate had already left at around 11.30 am.

The incident sparked off a protest by various student parties, including representatives of the Student Council, who alleged that the candidate — a SOI leader — was using unfair means during the exam.

Though the candidate, Vikramjit Singh, alias Vicky, was not caught red handed, an inquiry was marked and a complaint was given to the Chandigarh Police.

“The CCTV footage will be used to investigate the case,” said PU’s Chief Security Officer Jatinder Grover.

Vikramjit Singh had appeared for the entrance exam at the UIAMS department on the South campus of the PU. Soon after the VC returned to his office, A PCS officer, who was also appearing for the entrance exam, reached (VC’s office) his office and said that he was getting disturbed since Vikramjit was talking on the phone. “Following my complaint, the invigilator intervened and the student leader left the examination hall”, said Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examination, PU. “His answersheet has been seized”, he added.

The university authorities informed the local police and gave a complaint against Vikramjit Singh for using unfair means during the entrance exam.

Police officials said they were investigating the matter.
