Mohali, May 20

Souvik Roy, a former international table tennis player, believes that the sport needs more attention in terms of funds and advanced training. Roy, who is organising a seven-day coaching clinic for the local players, said there was a need to improve the grassroots level.

Roy is accompanied by table tennis players Chandan Das, former East Bengal captain and an Asian Cup winner, and SP Acharjee, a motivational instructor. The clinic, which started on Saturday, was attended by 50 players.“There is a lot of scope for improvement in Indian table tennis but there is a need for more funds for high-level training for both the players and coaches,” said Roy. “Getting more national and international exposure is the key to improve performance.”

He also said that the performance of the Indian team in the recent Commonwealth Games has motivated youngsters to take interest in the sport. “After the CWG, the world has taken notice of the Indian table tennis teams. There was some excellent play by the new generation, which ultimately yielded favourable results for the contingent. The win has impacted the youngsters in a positive manner. For instance, we have an overwhelming response of players for this seven-day coaching clinic, when compared to last season. I am very happy to see the improvement in the mentality of the players,” said Roy.

He also stressed that there should me more international exposure for kids and more tournaments for them. “In the current scenario, leagues like UTT are improving players’ quality. However, more local competitions/leagues are also necessary to keep on improving.” —TNS
