City eves beat SAI 3-2

CHANDIGARH:Buoyed by skipper Amrit Pal's hat-trick, Hockey Chandigarh beat Sports Authority of India (SAI) 3-2 on the opening day of the Hockey India 7th Sub Junior National Hockey Championship 2017 (Women) 'A' at Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu today.

Chandigarh, January 11

Buoyed by skipper Amrit Pal's hat-trick, Hockey Chandigarh beat Sports Authority of India (SAI) 3-2 on the opening day of the Hockey India 7th Sub Junior National Hockey Championship 2017 (Women) 'A' at Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu today.

After holding their opponents 1-1 in the first half, Hockey Chandigarh took the lead in the 44th minute through Amrit Pal's field goal. The skipper earlier also scored the equaliser in the 29th minute. Amrit struck again in the 49th minute, when she successfully converted a penalty corner, to complete a hat-trick and give her side a decisive 3-1 lead. 

Though SAI tried to make a comeback in the 66th minute with a late goal by Akanksha Shukla, the city girls pressed hard in the remaining minutes to win the opening tie in Pool A. 

UP beat Patiala 

Uttar Pradesh Hockey, meanwhile, registered a 3-1 victory over Hockey Patiala in another Pool A match. 

After the scores were level in the first half, with both teams scoring a goal each, UP took the lead in the second half with two successive goals in the 52nd (Yogita Bora) and 60th minute (Sapna Devi). Earlier, Varsha Khushwaha opened the scoring for UP with a field goal in the 24th minute of the match.

Hockey Patiala's lone goal came through a penalty corner conversion by Sumita in the 30th minute. — TNS
