Now, dog-bite victims will be provided treatment round-the-clock at the Mohali Civil Hospital. Till now, the treatment was provided only during OPD timings (8 am to 2 pm). Patients visiting the hospital after that were given first aid and were asked to come the next day.

The Managing Director of Punjab Health Systems Corporation, Varun Roojam, at a meeting with the Civil Surgeon of Mohali and the Senior Medical Officer of the hospital, issued instructions in this regard. “Dog-bite cases increase this time of the year and we need a facility where patients could be treated 24 hours a day,” said Roojam.

Dr Manjit Singh, SMO, Civil Hospital, Phase VI, said they had the required staff for the job and had enough stock of anti-rabies vaccine. “We will start round-the-clock service as per instructions by the month-end,” said the SMO. However, serious cases, for which a costly immunoglobulin serum is required, will be referred to the PGI or the GMCH-32 in Chandigarh.

The hospital has also provided a special counter to dog-bite patients. They are directly taken to the emergency, where they are administered the anti-rabies vaccine free of cost.

The number of dog-bite cases received at the Mohali Civil Hospital has been rising rapidly since March this year. As many 1,055 cases have been reported this year so far.
