Lovleen (18), a first-year student of the UILS, Panjab University, who was residing in Girls’ Hostel No. 5, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her hostel room this evening. Lovleen was pursuing BA LLB (first semester).
According to the police, no injury marks were found on the body. Lovleen was a native of Gurdaspur district in Punjab. The police collected samples of food and belongings of the student from the hostel room.
Hostel inmates residing in adjoining rooms were also questioned by the police to know about the behaviour of the girl during the past few days. A police official said the postmortem report would throw light on the cause of the death. The postmortem would be conducted tomorrow.
According to Lovleen’s friends, she had dinner in the mess and a cup of coffee with them last night.
PU DSW (Women) Meena Kaplash said the girl’s parents had been informed about her death by the university. She said nothing suspicious was found from the girl’s room by the police.
Kaplash said Lovleen’s roommate, who was away to her home, arrived at 8.30 am today and found Lovleen sleeping. Thinking that Lovleen might be tired and did not want to attend the class, the roommate left for the department. When she returned at 5.45 pm, she found Lovleen lying in the same position and informed the attendant and warden, who took Lovleen to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors declared her brought dead.
The PU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Arun Kumar Grover, and the Registrar, Col GS Chadha (retd), rushed to the spot after they got information about the girl’s death in the hostel.
PU Chief Security Officer Jatinder Grover said during preliminary investigation, the police did not found anything suspicious from the student’s room.
