Students showcase creativity at IT Fiesta

CHANDIGARH: The postgraduate department of computer science and applications of the Guru Gobind Singh College for Women (GGSCW), Sector 26, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), UT, organised IT Fiesta, an annual celebration of the college, to promote awareness of science and technology among youth.

The postgraduate department of computer science and applications of the Guru Gobind Singh College for Women (GGSCW), Sector 26, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), UT, organised IT Fiesta, an annual celebration of the college, to promote awareness of science and technology among youth.

Ravinder Singh, project director, DST, was the chief guest. He expressed that technology was growing exponentially and urged youth to maintain pace with it.

He motivated girls to excel in all fields of life. Gurdev Singh, president, Sikh Educational Society, and Col Jasmer Singh Bala (retd), Secretary, Sikh Educational Society, were the guests of honour.

Dr Charanjeet Kaur Sohi, principal of the college, appreciated the efforts of the department and encouraged students towards a healthy competition for acing in all fields of life. Dr Rohini Arora, HOD, PG department of computer science and applications, said the department was taking strides towards the brighter future of the students so that they could take on any competition and come out with flying colours in all technical and personal skills. Such events ensure spirit of competition and students learn to work in teams.

Students from over 20 colleges from in and around the city participated in the gala event through online registration. Various competitions related to IT such as website designing, software development, poster presentation, cartooning, e-waste modelling, face painting, collage-making, software debugging and photography were held. A modeling contest was also held. On the basis of it, Dheeraj from the PGGC, Sector 11, was adjudged ‘Mr IT Fiesta’ while Himanshi from the college won the title of ‘Ms IT Fiesta’. The overall trophy was won by Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46.

Street plays were also staged. The teams participated in ‘Tech Rangoli’ on the current issue of Digital India. Stalls were set up and an exhibition was also held.

Beautiful rangolis on technology themes and designs made by the students attracted visitors’ attention. Dance items were also presented which embraced fusion between technology and entertainment. Competitions such as e-waste modelling gave an opportunity to utilise waste material in an efficient way. Broken CDs, wires, and redundant electronic equipment were used creatively to form models such as pen stand, mobile phone and aeroplanes. Face painting and group dance maintained the enthusiasm of the participants. The imagination of students was well presented in the cartooning competition which showcased how technology can be used well in the field of cartoons. To felicitate and promote the alumnus of the institution, the department invited 15 alumni of the college as judges for the events. A selfie corner, which was extensively used by girls for clicking pictures with different props, was also set up during the event.
