Mohali, October 8

A 55-year-old suspended employee of the Chandigarh District Courts allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at the Sector 70 petrol pump last night. The victim, Avtar Singh, who worked as a bailiff in the courts, had attempted suicide earlier on May 19 this year in Chandigarh near the Sector 32 hospital and was booked in a case under Section 309 of the IPC then.

While no suicide note was found today, Avtar Singh had allegedly blamed a Judge of the District Courts in the suicide note that he wrote while attempting suicide five months ago when he was booked by the police. He had also filed a writ petition in the High Court against a Judge of the District Courts following his suspension orders, which was later dismissed as withdrawn.

Even as his family remained tightlipped, sources said he was depressed and was taking treatment. According to the police, the deceased, Avtar Singh, from Sieu village near Sohana, was shifted to a private hospital after he consumed poison. He died last night. Giving details, Inspector Mahesh Saini, SHO of the area police station, said the deceased was under suspension for the past three months and was reportedly depressed.

“He took poison at around 5 pm yesterday near the petrol pump in Sector 70. He was taken to a private hospital at Phase IV where he died late last night. Then victim’s son, in his statement, claimed that his father mistakenly took a wrong medicine, which reacted,” said Inspector Saini.

The police have initiated inquest proceedings.
