Recently, the World Health Organisation released a list of most polluted cities. Patiala has been named in the 20 top 20 polluted cities. The PPCB is really upset with the development. A year ago, Khanna in Punjab was also mentioned in the list. According to WHO, more than two million people die every year due to air pollution. There is a need to act fast to contain the alarming situation. Punjab has surpassed Delhi in air pollution with the air quality index crossing the 400-mark against the normal limit of 100 in October 2017. The blame game needs to be stopped. Stubble burning should be checked. According to a report by The Lancet, indoor pollution is the bigger killer. There is a need to make provisions for a smooth flow of traffic. Cut car use, start carpooling, use the public transport, plant trees and save natural resources. Garbage burning should be banned. The odd-even plan can be implemented.

Steps needed to stop fire incidents

Despite several fire incidents taking place due to short circuit, nothing has been done to deal with live wires hanging loosely from poles and electricity boxes in Panchkula. The tendency to instal electricity meters outside buildings on a pole, with a number of feeding cables, as in the Sector 20 markets, is disgusting and must be done away with. The casual approach of electricians and a paucity of proper tools need to be looked into by higher authorities.

Waterlogging outside post office

Often, water accumulates in front of the main post office in Sector 8, Panchkula. Waterlogging becomes a regular feature in the rainy season because of uneven surface and the nearest drainage outlet, situated quite a distance away. Needless to say, such a situation not only causes inconvenience to residents but also serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The authorities concerned should immediately take requisite steps to solve the problem.
