Tarini Goyal scored 7.5 points in 11 rounds to share the fifth place in the National U-19 (Junior) Chess Championship held in Patna.
The 16-year-old student of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, was today awarded for her achievement.
Ajay Kumar Yadav (4.5 points), Vedant Joshi (4 points), and Vedushi Joshi (3 points) were the other players who represented Chandigarh in the competition.
Around 116 boys and 73 girls from over 20 states of the country participated in the championship.
M Mahalakshmi of Tamil Nadu claimed the girls’ title with nine points.
Tarini had a good out outing except from a game against the eventual champion, Mahalakshmi.
Tarini scored five wins, each against Aneri of Gujarat , Sreezzaa Potluri of Tamil Nadu, Sunyasakta of Odisha, Rutuja Bakshi of Maharashtra and Nityata Jain of Madhya Pradesh.
She had to settle for draws with the national silver medallist Sakshi Chitlange of Maharashtra and bronze medallist Isha Sharma of Karnataka.
She also drew with Toshali V of Andhra Pradesh, Srishti Pandey of Maharashtra and Smaraki Mohanty of Odisha.
